"If" Penn State would've joined the BEFC, Tech would've likely...


been left out. Tech gets in if the BEFC expanded to 10. Two things that I feel helped get Tech into the BEFC were (1) Tech was the closest southern independent school to the BEFC footprint and (2) Penn State joining the Big Ten. It didn't hurt that Tech already had a rivalry with WVU. Before the BEFC, Tech was in the same situation as southern schools like ECU, Louisville, Southern Miss, Tulane and Memphis State. CUSA was formed five or so years after the BEFC. ECU joined CUSA a year later. By that time Tech had already won a Sugar Bowl game. Tech made the right decision to join the BEFC.
